Brad Lander, New York City’s comptroller and the city’s highest-ranking Jewish elected official, announced he is running for mayor Tuesday. He will challenge Mayor Eric Adams from the left in next year’s election.

His progressive bona fides were on display one recent Sunday afternoon, when a small group of Israeli-led activists gathered in Manhattan’s Union Square to hold signs reading “There is no military solution,” chant “ceasefire now” and call for the return of Hamas’ hostages and an end to the occupation of the West Bank.
