Around the country, voters are saying yes to big-tent, coalition based politics. Results are still coming in for some areas, but one thing is clear: the American people have overwhelmingly rebuked the politics of authoritarianism, racism, the erosion of rights, and pitting our communities against one another. From Maine to Texas, more Americans than ever are saying no to ICE, no to the degrading of democratic institutions, and no to the corruption and bigotry that has characterized so much of our national conversations in the past several years. This is a moment of unique opportunity, and NYJA is looking forward to working with city and state elected officials old and new to continue to uplift the voices and values of New York’s liberal Jewish community.
Here at NYJA, we are proud that one of our co-founders, Brad Lander, and one of our former board members, Micah Lasher, are now officially congressmembers-elect, going to Washington to represent the interests of New Yorkers on the national level. Their election represents the big tent NYJA holds, encompassing people with a multitude of beliefs, perspectives, and identities. They’re both people of integrity, with excellent values, and care deeply about their Judaism and their Jewish roots. Mazal Tov, Brad and Micah!
Ultimately, these election results are fertile ground for NYJA’s continued work to uplift liberal and progressive Jewish values. We are eager to work with our elected officials to protect immigrants, build communal safety with our neighbors across the city and state, and revitalize our democracy. This moment is full of potential, and these election results are the first step to continuing these important efforts for a New York where we can all thrive.
